A man said, “Let’s have Chinese food.”

His wife said, “Okay,” but then asked, “Do you want to go out or bring it in?”

Possibly feeling trapped, he shouted angrily, “Why do you have to make it so difficult?”

If Controllers actually hear a Witness of their own accord, let go of their picture of how a Witness is, and hear the words a Witness speaks just as if she or he truly were a separate person, they usually feel as if they are committing suicide. This is because they have severed their own Control Connection. They have no place to anchor Teddy, and they feel a sudden separateness—separateness from reality itself.

Confusing themselves as much as anyone, some Controllers have adopted a very covert and self-serving strategy by which they solve the problem of response and thereby avoid the terror of disconnection. They only seem to respond. Here is how it works.

The Controller says “yes” to a request without accepting it as real. For example, the question, “Will you call if you’re going to be late?” is answered with a “yes,” but the Controller doesn’t follow through and keep the agreement. It is as if the Controller preserves Pretend Person by the following unconscious reasoning.
